I am trying to stick to my promise and post more often. I actually have several things that need to be posted so the next couple weeks should stay busy. So after the table I decided I liked the whole refinishing furniture thing. In our bedroom we have a nightstand that I have had for 15 years or so. It has been moved so many times I'm surprised the thing has not broken. It was originally a dark cherry wood with black handles. I'm new at this posting thing so I forgot to take a before picture. I guess I just got too excited about starting the project.
I wanted to get the beach/antique look so I went with a blueish stain. And here is the final look:
Here is what you need:
~ Hand Sander (I used an electric one)
~ Sand Paper (about 3-4 sheets)
~ Wood Stain (Home Depot $7.77)
~ Polyurethane (Home Depot $10.96)
~ Paint Brush
Step 1:
Remove the drawers and hardware.
Step 2:
Sand the dresser. ***When I started to sand I noticed the top of the nightstand was not real wood. I sanded what I could and that left a lot of the cherry wood behind. this turned out to be a good thing!!
Step 3:
Wipe down the furniture with a wet cloth. You want to make sure you do this step because it could cause the stain to look different if you rush the clean up process.
Step 4:
Start staining. In step 2 I said that leaving a little cherry color on the top turned out good. Well the reason is because when I started to stain it caused the look to be distressed and I liked that look. For the drawers I did not sand them I just painted over them because I wanted them to have the same look as the top.
Step 5:
Put a layer of Poly on to seal the piece of furniture.
Step 6:
Replace the hardware with the old or buy new. I kept the old.
Step 7:
ENJOY!!
Questions??? Just ask!
You should look into chalk paint. It works really well!!
