How to Whitewash a Brick Fireplace

Over the weekend I decided I would tackle our fireplace renovation project.  I had the idea to whitewash the brick and paint the mantle and trim white.  After looking on Pinterest for a few ideas I settled on a method I found on Infarrantly Creative.  I did change a few things but I used her ratio 1 Part Paint 3 Part Water.  Here is what you need...

White paint (I used a small sample can we had in the garage)
Water
Paint Brush or a Teflon Painter Pad
Old Towel

I poured the whole can of white into an old bucket and then filled the can up three times with water and mixed.  {I was going for a light cover on the white}  If you want to go a little darker try a 1/1 mixture.  My biggest suggestion is to used the Teflon Painter Pad.  I started with an old paintbrush and the paint was splattering EVERYWHERE, seriously I had to repaint the blue on the wall it got so messy.  With the painter pad I was able to paint smoother and it allowed for less mess.  I went about 5-6 bricks before I wiped (gently) with the towel.

A few tips...
* Clean the brick first- wipe it with a towel then use the vacuum brush tool to get all the loose nitty gritty stuff off.
* Use a Painter Pad- less mess and it covers more ground
* Don't panic- After I did a few bricks I thought I made a huge mistake but once I got about half way I could see the beauty
* Wipe any drip lines quickly- they will cause a permanent line if left too long
