When we moved in all of the hardware was gold... I was ready to change that. I wanted to change the lighting in the kitchen but I did not want to spend that much so I began my research. I found a link on pinterest http://www.craftynest.com/2009/03/hemp-pendant-lamps/ I made a few changes but for the most part I followed the basic instructions. Here is my step-by-step process to new and cheap lighting...
Materials...
*Beach Ball or Bouncy Ball(the ones you find at Walmart in the center of the isle in the tall jail looking thing, if you have no idea what I am talking about just ask your kids or husband- it never fails every trip they have to pull a ball out and play with it while I shop)
*Jute Yarn
*Craft Glue
*Knife or Pin to pop the ball
*Sharpe Pen
Step-By-Step...
1. Draw a circle on the ball- this is for the opening so it should not be a huge circle. I used the circle opening to hand the finished ball, on the site above they used the circle to let light out of the bottom- your call.
2. Put glue on your fingers or on the yarn directly- Rub the glue into the yarn and begin wrapping the ball. I put a towel down because this process can get messy. I would only do about 12 inches at a time so the glue wouldn't get out of control. This step took several days per ball- 1-I was doing this at night as I watched TV relaxing from the day and 2- my back would get tired from leaning over.
3. Wrap until you reach the end of the yarn spool or until you have the design you want. There is no right or wrong way to wrap, you just keep wrapping it around leaving the circle you drew blank.
4. Let it dry for a day after you finish the wrapping.
5. Cut a hole in the ball to deflate and pull in out of the open hole.
6. Hang and Enjoy!!
These have been hanging in our home for two years now. Before I hung them up a spray painted the chain a silver color to match the rest of the hardware in the house.
